I thought that maybe 4x 4GB would be cheaper than 2x 8GB, but surprisingly, didn’t actually find any deals that made this worth it.Didn’t do enough research to have an opinion on memory timings (which isn’t the same thing as memory speed).Sweet spot these days seems to be 1600 or 1866 above that, doesn’t seem to matter. Must support the speed of the RAM you get.Case must support motherboard form factor (ATX, micro ATX, etc.).SATA slots - enough for all disk drives and media devices. It doesn’t need to be able to run both x16 slots at x16 speed, though 2x x16 running at x8 each is fine. This means at least 2x x16, one for each graphics card.

This is partly a list of performance considerations and specs, with gaming and the Rift in mind, and partly a refresher on PC component compatibility in general. I’m sharing the notes from my own research here, in case anyone finds them helpful. So if you’re like me and only buy new computer hardware every handful of years, you may find yourself needing to put in some research time.

Oculus is understandably reluctant to publish specifics themselves their DK2 FAQ only recommends, “A desktop computer running a dedicated graphics card with DVI-D or HDMI graphics output, with capability of running current generation 3D games at 1080p resolution at 75fps or higher.” But it’s hard to blame them for being hand-wavey - specific hardware requirements really depend on the games/experiences you run, not the Rift itself.

Unfortunately, it’s hard to find good specific hardware suggestions for building a Rift development machine. Since my current PC is from 2008, my first step has been putting together a new machine.

Original post: Because the Rift has some pretty significant performance needs - high resolution, high framerate, low latency, rendering two eyes - it takes some pretty beastly hardware to handle it. Interestingly, Oculus didn’t use the word “minimum,” they just said “recommended.” I’m sure they debated that internally. They’re fairly close to the specs I chose I just have more RAM and a slightly faster CPU. UPDATE: Oculus has posted the official recommended PC specs here.
